Frequently Asked Questions

  • Help! My dog ate the product. Is it safe?

Yes, it is safe. While not intended to be consumed, the materials used in Restore products are non-toxic to our furry friends. That said, if your pet is showing any concerning signs, seek veterinary care immediately.

Our Restore Gel uses food grade gelatin and starch for thickening, as well as sodium nitrite, a component of meat tenderizer. The dark color comes from graphite, which is the same stuff in pencil lead, and aluminum powder (a fine powder version of aluminum foil).

The actives in our Restore Pads are contained within a sandwich of non-woven material commonly used in baby diapers. They contain an absorbent gel material (AGM) that is also found in diapers. Additionally, graphite (pencil lead) and aluminum powder (aluminum foil) along with sodium nitrite (meat tenderizer) are found inside.

How does nitric oxide heal wounds?

Nitric oxide heals wounds by stimulating the animal's natural biochemistry, effectively jump starting the natural healing process. Applications include post-surgical wounds, chronic wounds, infected wounds, burn wounds, acute wounds, and other wounds requiring a healing boost. A good deal of research supports the positive impact of NO on wound healing. In fact, the 1998 Nobel Prize was awarded to Drs. Ignarro, Furchgott, and Murad for their discovery of nitric oxide's important role in the cardiovascular system as a signaling molecule.

What types of wounds will Restore Wound Pads and Restore Wound Gel help?

Restore Pads and Gel provide a healing boost and infection control to any and all wounds. Restore is recommended for infection control and the treatment of all wounds in small and large animals, e.g., lacerations, surgical incisions, wounds treated by secondary intent, bites, and minor scrapes and cuts. Restore can be used with existing wound technology such as skin grafts, negative pressure, hyperbaric oxygen, laser, etc. if desired.

Is there any contraindication when using the Restore products on an oncological wound with the possibility of remaining cancer cells?

We highly recommend that veterinarians make a case by case judgement based on the patient and their experience. We have yet to do a clinical trial with our treatments for this indication, and the literature has a vast body of seemingly contradictory information regarding nitric oxide's effect on tumor cells. For instance this recent paper sums up the apparent contradiction:

Within the tumour microenvironment, low to moderate levels of NO derived from tumour and endothelial cells can activate angiogenesis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, promoting an aggressive phenotype. In contrast, high levels of NO derived from inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expressing M1 and Th1 polarised macrophages and lymphocytes may exert an anti-tumour effect protecting against cancer. It is important to note that the existing evidence on immunomodulation is mainly based on murine iNOS studies which produce higher fluxes of NO than human iNOS.

Our product delivers a nitric oxide dose higher than that produced by iNOS in wounds and tumor cells and thus we expect positive results. Veterinarians who have used the product post mass removals have reported results consistent with that expectation.

  • How do you activate and apply the pad?

You can find detailed instructions, including videos, for activation and application of Restore Wound Pads here, and conveniently on the pad packaging.

The contents of the dry Restore Wound Pad have settled to one corner or side of the pad. Is that an issue?

Settling of the dry contents occurs naturally during shipping. Once the dressing is activated with water gently massage the contents to distribute the material.

How often should I change the pads?

We recommend that Restore pads be changed every 2-4 day. The pad may continue to produce nitric oxide up to 7 days, if it remains hydrated.

When should I stop using the pads?

When the wound is completely healed.

Can I combine multiple pads over a larger surface area?

Yes. Each Restore pad provides localized delivery of nitric oxide. For larger wounds, multiple pads can be placed in any orientation to deliver nitric oxide to the wound. Each pad is a self-contained nitric oxide generator and will produce nitric oxide independently of other dressings.

    What overwrap is recommended?

You may use whatever you like. The Restore pad is non-adherent and will require some means of immobilization over the wound. We do recommend an occlusive secondary dressing for best performance as Restore continues delivering nitric oxide until it dries. Occlusion will keep Restore delivering longer until you are ready to inspect the wound.

What if I cannot overwrap or adhere Restore to the treatment site?

For wounds that are difficult to overwrap or for surface wounds which are left to heal by secondary intent Restore Gel can also deliver accelerated wound closure while reducing risk of infection.

  • How do you activate and apply the gel?

You can find detailed instructions, including videos, for activation and application of Restore Wound Gel here and conveniently on the gel packaging.

How often should I reapply the gel?

We recommend reapplication of gel on a daily basis. You may choose to apply more frequently particularly if the wound will remain uncovered. If the gel remains hydrated, it may remain active for up to seven days.

When should I stop using the gel?

When the wound is completely healed.

    What overwrap is recommended?

You may use whatever you like. We do recommend an occlusive secondary dressing for best performance as Restore continues delivering nitric oxide until it dries. Occlusion will keep Restore delivering longer until you are ready to inspect the wound. The Restore gel is non-toxic in small amounts, but covering to prevent the animal from licking or rubbing the gel off will speed healing.
